Deadly drone strikes in Mali claim 10 civilian lives during wedding preparations
Mali drone strikes leave at least 10 civilians dead near Téné
A devastating drone strike carried out by Mali’s military forces has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 10 civilian lives in the central region of the country. Among the victims were young men preparing for a traditional group wedding ceremony in Téné, underscoring the fragile security situation gripping the nation.
The strike targeted the village of Téné, located in the San region, where local residents were gathering for a culturally significant collective wedding. This incident highlights the escalating tensions and persistent violence plaguing Mali’s central zones.
Escalation amid ongoing security crisis
Sunday’s drone attacks occurred just days after coordinated assaults by armed groups on April 25 and 26, which targeted government positions and military outposts. The attacks were attributed to the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda-affiliated faction, alongside the predominantly Tuareg Azwad Liberation Front (FLA).
Since these attacks, Mali’s military has struggled to maintain control over key areas, including the strategic city of Kidal in the north. The loss of Defense Minister Sadio Camara, a central figure in the junta, has further weakened the government’s position. A road blockade on major routes leading to Bamako has been enforced, disrupting supply chains and civilian movement.
In recent weeks, jihadist groups have intensified their campaign in central Mali, launching multiple deadly attacks that have left scores of civilians dead. These assaults, claimed by JNIM, have exacerbated fears of further instability and humanitarian crises in the region.
Local voices reveal the human cost
A grieving resident of Téné, who spoke on condition of anonymity, shared the tragic details of the strike. «Ten of our young men were killed in an unprovoked attack. What was meant to be a joyous celebration turned into sorrow,» the local said, reflecting the profound impact on the community.
A security source, also requesting anonymity, confirmed the drone strike and its devastating consequences. «The drones targeted a procession of motorcycles, which likely drew their attention. At least nine individuals were killed in the strike,» the source explained. A local official further corroborated the toll, stating, «A wedding was about to begin when the drones killed at least ten civilians. It is a profound tragedy for our people.»
Broader implications and legal action
The incident has ignited concerns about the growing number of civilian casualties in Mali, many of whom are accused of alleged collaboration with opposing factions. Reports indicate that both military forces and their allied groups, as well as jihadist organizations, have been involved in retaliatory attacks against civilians.
In a separate development, three civil society organizations filed a complaint with the Africa Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights on April 20, citing alleged human rights violations committed by Mali’s armed forces and their Russian allies. The case underscores the mounting pressure on the government to address the humanitarian and security crises unfolding across the country.
