Congo bishops warn of deepening crisis in nation’s future
Catholic Bishops Sound Alarm Over Deteriorating Conditions in the Democratic Republic of Congo
In a candid assessment delivered on Saturday, June 20, the National Episcopal Conference of the Congo (CENCO) issued a stark warning regarding the escalating challenges facing the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). During an extraordinary plenary session in Kinshasa, the Catholic bishops painted a grim picture of the country’s socio-economic, security, and political landscape, describing it as a ‘nation in peril.’

The bishops highlighted rising insecurity in eastern DRC as a top concern. Despite multiple peace agreements, armed violence persists, with civilians bearing the brunt of massacres and displacement. The humanitarian crisis, they noted, continues to worsen, leaving thousands vulnerable and destabilizing the region.
The CENCO acknowledged modest improvements in infrastructure and road networks but emphasized that these developments have done little to uplift the lives of ordinary citizens. Poverty remains entrenched, fueling social unrest and deepening inequalities across the nation.
Political Tensions Threaten Stability
The bishops reserved their sharpest criticism for the political arena, where tensions are escalating over potential constitutional reforms. The debate, they argued, is unfolding in an atmosphere of intimidation, repression, and fear, jeopardizing the nation’s democratic foundations.
CENCO cautioned against any unilateral moves to alter the Constitution, warning of severe consequences, including widespread unrest or even national fragmentation. Upholding the constitutional oath must remain the government’s priority, they stressed, urging President Félix Tshisekedi to prioritize dialogue and legal processes to safeguard peace.
A Call for Responsibility and Unity
At the heart of the bishops’ message is a plea to safeguard the DRC’s core values: peace, unity, and a shared future. In a country grappling with multiple crises, they urged political and social leaders to act responsibly, warning that failure to do so could lead to irreversible consequences.
