China Gabon ties: 52 years of strong diplomatic bonds

The 99th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army was recently commemorated in Libreville, marking a milestone in the enduring partnership between Gabon and China. The event, held at the Chinese embassy, underscored themes of remembrance, peace, and collaboration between the two nations.

Addressing the gathering, China’s ambassador to Gabon, Zhou Ping, highlighted the robust ties between Libreville and Beijing. He noted that this year also celebrates 52 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The celebration coincided with an upcoming high-level visit, as Gabon’s President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema is set to travel to China in November at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

The ambassador also reflected on key milestones in China’s history, including 2026’s upcoming anniversaries: the 90th anniversary of the Long March victory and the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. “For over a century, the CPC has led the Chinese people and the People’s Liberation Army in forging remarkable contributions to national independence, economic growth, and the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era,” he stated before a distinguished audience of officials and diplomats.

In a world marked by “turmoil and conflict,” the diplomat reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to diplomacy and peaceful resolutions. He emphasized the “four global initiatives” introduced by President Xi Jinping—focused on development, security, civilization, and international governance—as China’s blueprint for global peace and progress.

The evening highlighted tangible examples of cooperation, including the 2024 visit of the “Ark of Peace,” a Chinese hospital ship that made its second stop in Gabon, and the recent reception of a Chinese military medical mission in Gabon. These efforts have further strengthened military ties between the two countries. The event also introduced Gabon to its new face of defense cooperation: Colonel Zhang Song, the newly appointed military attaché.
