Chilean parliamentary group reaffirms support for UN Resolution 2797 on Moroccan Sahara

For Chile, Morocco represents a vital gateway to the African continent. Both nations also share significant potential for economic synergy, particularly within the agricultural sector.

María Catalina Del Real Mihovilovic, who presides over the Chile-Morocco parliamentary friendship group, publicly reaffirmed her group’s unwavering support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 concerning the Moroccan Sahara. Her statement came on Tuesday in Rabat.

Speaking to the press following her discussions with Nasser Bourita, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Ms. Del Real Mihovilovic emphasized that this resolution is crucial as it endorses the autonomy plan as a “serious and lasting solution” to the ongoing dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

She further noted that the friendship group, which comprises members from diverse political factions, stands in full solidarity with this significant resolution.

Highlighting the substantial economic synergy between Chile and Morocco, Ms. Del Real Mihovilovic pointed to the critical role of Moroccan fertilizers for Chilean agriculture. She also underscored Chile’s position as a key exporter of strategic minerals, including copper and lithium, which are indispensable for Morocco’s rapidly expanding automotive industry.

During their visit, the Chilean delegation also stressed the importance for their nation to forge strategic alliances with the Kingdom across various other sectors, such as seawater desalination, advanced technology, and tourism.

Ms. Del Real Mihovilovic recalled that the parliamentary delegation’s visit to Morocco coincided with two significant milestones: the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and the 22nd anniversary of His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s historic visit to Chile. She emphasized that Chile’s foreign policy operates as a “state policy,” ensuring that their friendship with Morocco transcends any particular political affiliations.
