Strategic defense cooperation: Cameroon and Turkey elevate military partnership

Under direct orders from President Paul Biya, Cameroon’s Deputy Minister to the Presidency in charge of Defense Joseph Beti Assomo has concluded a historic military and financial cooperation agreement with Turkish authorities in Ankara. The landmark pact was signed by Cameroon’s Defense Minister Joseph Beti Assomo and his Turkish counterpart, Yaşar Güler, with Vice-Minister Musa Heybet also participating in the negotiations.

The agreement formalizes a strategic shift in bilateral relations, focusing on financial and military collaboration mechanisms. It builds on years of existing cooperation, including Turkey’s long-standing training programs for Cameroonian military personnel at the National Defense University of Turkey (MSÜ).

During his official visit to the MSÜ, Joseph Beti Assomo engaged in high-level discussions covering three key pillars: enhancing bilateral military cooperation, strengthening the training of Cameroonian Armed Forces officers, and deepening strategic relations between the two nations. This follows a public acknowledgment by Beti Assomo in May 2025 of Turkey’s commitment to providing free training for Cameroonian cadets and non-commissioned officers in Turkish military academies.

The newly signed agreement marks a quantum leap in defense collaboration. While Cameroon has historically relied on partners like France, the United States, and Israel for military support, this pact with Turkey introduces a new dimension focused on training, financing, and operational cooperation.

This strategic move underscores Cameroon’s commitment to diversifying its defense alliances while reinforcing its position as a key player in regional security.
