Burkina Faso faces deadly weekend attacks claiming 22 lives
Attaques au Burkina Faso : au moins 22 militaires et civils tués ce week-end

A series of recent jihadist offensives in Burkina Faso has tragically claimed the lives of at least 22 individuals, including both military personnel and civilian auxiliaries known as Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP). The military junta, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, is intensifying its counter-operations in response to this persistent and alarming security situation that has plagued the nation for several years.

Over the past weekend, suspected jihadist groups launched new attacks in northern Burkina Faso, resulting in the deaths of at least 22 soldiers and civilian VDP members.

Burkina Faso, under the leadership of the military junta that seized power in a September 2022 coup led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has endured a decade of deadly assaults across vast swathes of its territory. These attacks are primarily perpetrated by jihadist factions aligned with Al-Qaïda and the Islamic State. The ongoing conflict underscores the severe security challenges facing the Sahel region.

On Saturday morning, a base belonging to a Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) in Di, near Dédougou, came under direct assault from jihadists. Despite a valiant defense, the engagement resulted in the loss of at least fourteen soldiers and seven VDP members. These civilian auxiliaries, recruited in their thousands, continue to bear a heavy cost in the nation’s anti-jihadist struggle.

Another attack targeted the military detachment in Solhan, located in the northeast, causing multiple fatalities, including an officer. A comprehensive counter-operation was subsequently launched in response to this incident.

Both attacks have been confirmed, with reports indicating significant human and material losses. Additionally, a third assault occurred on Sunday, striking a military post in Séguénéga, a town situated near Kaya in the central-northern region.

Coordinated efforts, including a swift response and pursuit initiated on Saturday, led to the neutralization of dozens of terrorists and the recovery of various military equipment and logistical resources.

Solhan holds a grim history, having been the site of one of the country’s most devastating attacks in June 2021, which left between 130 and 160 civilians dead.

On Monday, the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaïda affiliate, claimed responsibility for several attacks against Burkinabè army positions in multiple cities, asserting the deaths of numerous Burkinabè soldiers.

Diplomatic tensions and new alliances

The current military regime, characterized by its authoritarian, repressive, and sovereignist stance, has ceased publicly disclosing the number of soldiers killed in these attacks for several years. While it occasionally reports on the outcomes of its counter-operations, such figures, like the claim of neutralizing over 400 terrorists last week following complex and coordinated attacks in Gayéri (Sirba region), Solhan, and Sebba (Liptako region), remain unverified by independent sources. This lack of transparency complicates the assessment of the true security situation in the Sahel.

The regime has linked these recent attacks to its unilateral decision in late June to sever diplomatic ties with France. Ouagadougou accused France of
