Brussels exhibition reveals Mali’s humanitarian crisis through powerful photos

From January 23 to February 12, Brussels will host a compelling photographic exhibition titled “In Their Eyes“, presented by seven leading humanitarian organizations at the Halles Saint-Géry. This powerful visual narrative aims to shine a light on the severe humanitarian crisis unfolding in Mali.

The exhibition features around thirty striking photographs captured by Malian photographer Tiécoura N’Daou in September 2025. The images were taken in the Gao and Mopti regions, where these organizations are actively supporting communities with funding from the European Union.

The primary goal of the exhibition is to document the crisis “through the eyes of those living it every day“, as organizers emphasize. It will highlight the struggles faced by displaced populations, the emotional toll of loss, and the vital work carried out by humanitarian workers on the ground.

a dire humanitarian situation in Mali

The situation in Mali has reached alarming levels, according to the participating NGOs. Over 400,000 people have been internally displaced, with women and children making up the majority. Additionally, 1.5 million people are grappling with food insecurity, and 1.5 million children under five are suffering from acute malnutrition. In 2024 alone, more than 35,000 human rights violations were recorded across the country.

key organizations behind the exhibition

The exhibition is a collaborative effort led by:

  • Médecins du Monde
  • Action contre la Faim
  • Norwegian Refugee Council
  • Danish Refugee Council
  • International Medical Corps
  • International Rescue Committee
