Benin leads global ocean prediction training with opera project
With the Bénin coastline facing mounting pressures from climate change and resource management challenges, the nation has taken a bold step forward in maritime innovation. The OPERA (Ocean Prediction Enhancement in Regions of Africa) initiative, a groundbreaking online training program focused on ocean forecasting fundamentals, has just concluded a seven-week session that attracted nearly 1,200 participants from 111 countries. This achievement underscores the University of Abomey-Calavi’s (UAC) pivotal role in advancing global ocean science, with Bénin emerging as a key player in the field.
Bénin’s academic institutions spearhead a global ocean science movement
Hosted by the UNESCO Chair / CIPMA at the University of Abomey-Calavi, the OPERA program delivered a comprehensive online learning experience designed to bridge theory and real-world applications. Of the 1,162 registrants, Bénin ranked as the most represented country, reflecting strong engagement from local educators, students, and environmental managers. This initiative demonstrates how national institutions can drive international collaboration while addressing pressing coastal challenges.
Dr. Frédéric Bonou, a leading researcher and lecturer at UAC, highlighted the program’s practical approach: « The true value of this course lies in its immediate applicability. Each module is structured to ensure participants can directly apply their newfound knowledge to pressing local issues, whether they are coastal managers, fishermen, or marine scientists. »
Cutting-edge tools to safeguard Bénin’s marine ecosystems
Over 21 hours of interactive training, participants explored advanced technologies such as satellite observation, Argo floats, and high-resolution numerical models. The goal? Equipping professionals with actionable skills to tackle critical maritime concerns, including:
- Coastal erosion prevention: Analyzing wave patterns and tidal dynamics to protect vulnerable shorelines.
- Sustainable fisheries management: Identifying and forecasting high-density fish zones to ensure responsible harvesting.
- Maritime safety: Enhancing surveillance of Beninese territorial waters and mitigating pollution risks.
A select group of 500 learners received personalized mentorship, culminating in a prestigious certification from the UNESCO Chair at the University of Abomey-Calavi and the University of Toulouse.
EU-backed initiative strengthens Bénin’s maritime sovereignty
The program’s success stems from a robust partnership between the University of Abomey-Calavi, the Gulf of Guinea Ocean Sciences Summer School (GGOSSS), and Mercator Ocean International. This collaboration received critical funding from the European Union under the Arc X / Global Gateway framework, reinforcing Bénin’s commitment to leveraging ocean science for sustainable development.
By fostering an international network of researchers—spanning Bénin, France, the United States, and Spain—the initiative positions young scientists and UAC volunteers as key contributors to global maritime expertise. This effort not only elevates Bénin’s scientific profile but also reinforces its strategic role in protecting and sustaining its coastal and marine resources.
