Bénin and Côte d’Ivoire strengthen economic ties during high-level visit

Minister Romuald Wadagni concludes pivotal diplomatic mission in Abidjan

The Bénin Minister of Economy and Finance, Romuald Wadagni, has wrapped up a significant diplomatic tour in Côte d’Ivoire, following stops in Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Togo. The final leg of his regional journey, marked by a meeting with Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, underscores a strategic diplomatic push for Bénin.

A strategic conclusion in Abidjan

Côte d’Ivoire served as the final destination of Wadagni’s inaugural high-level sub-regional tour. The Abidjan leg of the mission, both diplomatic and economic in scope, was accompanied by a robust ministerial delegation. The presence of the Foreign Affairs and Trade ministers highlighted the mission’s dual focus on political engagement and economic collaboration.

The Bénin delegation’s audience with President Ouattara provided a platform to voice Cotonou’s priorities within the UEMOA economic bloc.

Bilateral relations take center stage

During the meeting, both leaders emphasized the exceptional strength of historical ties between Bénin and Côte d’Ivoire. Beyond diplomatic niceties, the discussions reinforced the Cotonou-Abidjan partnership, particularly amid persistent challenges in cross-border trade, economic connectivity, and regional security.

« The talks revealed a shared vision on deepening commercial exchanges and solidifying strategic cooperation between our nations, » noted an official familiar with the proceedings.

CEDEAO challenges dominate regional agenda

The evolving political and security landscape across West Africa dominated the agenda. Wadagni and Ouattara examined pressing issues facing the Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO), including recent transitions and escalating security threats.

By visiting key CEDEAO members—Nigeria (a regional heavyweight), Burkina Faso and Niger (both part of the AES alliance), and Togo—before concluding in Côte d’Ivoire, the Bénin minister positioned himself as a bridge-builder. This tour reflects Cotonou’s commitment to fostering collaborative solutions for regional stability and economic integration.
