Algeria women's team makes history with CAN win over Ivory Coast

In a historic quarter-final clash at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, the Algerian national team stunned the Ivory Coast 2-1 to secure their first-ever semi-final berth. The victory also sealed their ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, marking a monumental achievement for Algerian football.

From deficit to triumph: Algeria’s dramatic comeback

The match opened with a goal from Ivory Coast’s Inès Konan in the 30th minute, putting the Elephants ahead. However, Algeria’s fortunes changed dramatically when Safi N’Sira Ouedraogo received a straight red card in the 42nd minute for a reckless kick at Algerian goalkeeper Chloé N’Gazi.

Seizing their numerical advantage, Algeria equalized just after halftime through substitute Inès Khiri (58th minute), who replaced Lina Boussaha at the break. The Ivorian defense cracked again in the 64th minute when Amira Ould Braham capitalized on a goalkeeper error by Aramatou Diakité to put Algeria ahead for good.

Ivory Coast nearly restored parity when Rebecca Elloh had a penalty kick saved by the post in the 62nd minute, but Algeria held firm to secure the win.

Historic milestone for Algerian football

This quarter-final appearance follows Algeria’s impressive run in the previous edition where they reached the same stage. Their semi-final qualification guarantees them a first-ever World Cup berth, setting the stage for an ambitious campaign in Brazil.
