AES condemns coordinated attacks threatening Sahel sovereignty
Mali: AES condemns coordinated attacks against Sahel sovereignty
The communiqué issued by the President of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), Captain Ibrahim Traoré, following the coordinated terrorist attacks against Mali, transcends conventional diplomatic condemnation. It represents a strategic shift toward a unified confederal stance, where any aggression against one member state is framed as an attack on the entire Sahel region.
By describing the attacks as “premeditated and long-planned”, the AES underscores their organized nature, logistical sophistication, and political intent: inflicting casualties, spreading terror, and undermining the region’s sovereignist momentum. For the AES, terrorism is not merely a security threat but a calculated tool to derail the liberation, sovereignty, and reconstruction efforts of Sahelian nations.
The statement also commends the Mali Armed Forces (FAMa) for their “professional, courageous, and resolute” response. This framing reinforces the legitimacy of FAMa, bolsters public morale, and positions Mali’s military response within a broader Sahelian collective defense framework.
Beyond solidarity with Mali, its government, and military, the AES reaffirms its commitment to three core principles: freedom, sovereignty, and dignity. These values now define the political discourse of the Confederation, transforming a security crisis into a strategic assertion of unity.
For Niger, a key member of this confederal alliance, the communiqué highlights a critical reality: the security of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger is now inseparable. Facing cross-border threats, the AES advocates for a unified political, military, and symbolic response rooted in Sahelian solidarity.
Reading the full statement reveals its significance: it is not just a message of solidarity but a political declaration reaffirming the AES’ cohesion and determination to continue the fight.
