40 nations back Morocco’s Sahara sovereignty at UN human rights council
Forty countries reaffirmed their backing for Morocco’s territorial integrity during the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva this week.
The declaration, delivered by Morocco’s UN Ambassador Omar Zniber on behalf of the group, emphasized that the Sahara issue remains aligned with the political path endorsed by the United Nations under the Security Council’s guidance.
The statement highlighted that Morocco’s autonomy initiative stands as a credible and pragmatic foundation for achieving a sustainable political resolution to the conflict while underscoring support for implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2797. This resolution aims to revive the political process with the involvement of all relevant parties.
The supporting nations commended Morocco’s autonomy proposal and its commitment to integrating residents of the Tindouf camps while ensuring their rights match those of Moroccan citizens. They also praised Morocco’s cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms, noting it demonstrates a proactive commitment to advancing and safeguarding fundamental rights and freedoms.
The communiqué stressed that the opening of consulates by multiple countries in Laayoune and Dakhla reflects growing international recognition of Morocco’s stance, while simultaneously fostering development, investment, and regional cooperation in the southern provinces. The group concluded by affirming that resolving the conflict would serve as a catalyst for integration and growth across Africa and the Arab world.
