Togo’s legislature convenes for extraordinary session to accelerate key reforms

Lomé — With climate action, economic growth and administrative efficiency at the forefront, Togo’s National Assembly has launched a critical extraordinary session under the guidance of the bureau led by Prof. Komi Selom Klassou. This urgent parliamentary gathering, convened by President Faure Gnassingbé, aims to address pressing socio-economic and institutional challenges facing the nation.

The session places particular emphasis on three transformative legislative proposals designed to modernize strategic sectors of the Togolese economy and society.

Three major reforms to reshape the nation’s economic and environmental landscape

These legislative initiatives target core areas that will determine Togo’s future development trajectory:

• Private sector and foreign investment: A comprehensive overhaul of commercial courts seeks to streamline dispute resolution through digital transformation and alignment with OHADA standards. The reforms aim to create a more predictable legal environment that secures business operations and safeguards employment across the country.

• Environmental protection and rural development: New legislation establishes a robust framework for managing protected areas while respecting traditional land-use practices. This balanced approach addresses long-standing concerns from both conservationists and local communities who depend on these ecosystems.

• Administrative modernization and diaspora relations: Togo’s accession to the Hague Convention eliminates the cumbersome process of legalizing public documents (degrees, contracts, civil status records), dramatically simplifying procedures for citizens, students and business operators both at home and abroad.

Nuclear safety commitments enter second legislative phase

In parallel work, the Senate has forwarded four international conventions to the National Assembly for second reading. These agreements, under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), cover critical safety aspects:

• Nuclear safety standards
• Radioactive waste management
• Rapid accident notification protocols
• Emergency radiological assistance mechanisms

The Speaker of the National Assembly has urged parliamentarians to approach their legislative duties with renewed vigor, emphasizing that these reforms directly respond to the urgent needs expressed by the population.
