Togo launches elite agriculture engineering program with French partner

Lomé witnessed a landmark agreement between Togo’s Groupe Scientifique SIGMA and France’s École Supérieure des Agricultures (ESA) to launch a cutting-edge agricultural engineering pipeline. The collaboration, formalized in a press event, marks a significant step in elevating higher education standards for budding agronomists in West Africa.

The initiative introduces a two-year Scientific Preparatory Class starting in the 2026-2027 academic year, designed exclusively for science baccalaureate holders. Its core mission: to equip students with the analytical and technical foundations needed to tackle the continent’s evolving agricultural challenges.

Bridging science and sustainable farming

According to Dr. Beaugrain Domongue, SIGMA’s Director of Development and Prospective, the program is built on a philosophy of marrying academic rigor with real-world agricultural innovation. « Our goal is to fuse excellence with land stewardship, empower local producers with advanced knowledge, and reinforce food security across the region, » he explained.

The partnership leverages ESA’s globally recognized pedagogical expertise, providing Togo-based students access to world-class curricula, faculty training, and international exposure through an annual Summer Workshop in Angers, France. Training modules will span agricultural sciences, environmental management, food systems, and agricultural technology, delivered through interactive, hands-on methodologies.

From classroom to career: a five-year pathway

The curriculum is structured in two phases: a two-year foundational phase at SIGMA, followed by a three-year engineering cycle at ESA. Graduates will earn the prestigious Diplôme d’Ingénieur Agronome, positioning them to lead agricultural transformations in Togo and beyond.

The program responds directly to the growing need for agronomists skilled in modernizing farming practices, enhancing productivity, and ensuring food self-sufficiency—a priority for West African nations grappling with climate variability and demographic pressures.

SIGMA: nurturing Africa’s scientific leaders

Established in 2018, Groupe Scientifique SIGMA has grown into a beacon of scientific education in Togo, offering secondary, preparatory, and tertiary programs. Committed to fostering critical thinking, innovation, and global engagement, SIGMA aims to cultivate a cohort of professionals capable of driving progress in science, engineering, and policy.
