As his diplomatic assignment in Togo concluded, European Union Ambassador Gwilym Ceri Jones held a farewell audience with the President of the Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, this Thursday. The occasion provided the diplomat an opportunity to present an optimistic assessment of a partnership he characterized as having substantially increased in both scope and influence.
Following his departure meeting, the European ambassador commended the broadened partnership between Brussels and Lomé during his tenure. This collaboration now encompasses sustainable development, infrastructure, energy, governance, education, and security. He explained that his visit aimed to engage with the Togolese head of state, listen to his perspectives, and provide an overview of the ongoing cooperation.
According to Gwilym Ceri Jones, the EU Ambassador to Togo, the outcome reflects a significant strengthening of this partnership, both in its breadth and impact.
Thriving investment programs
The diplomat emphasized the strengthening of European investment programs in Togo, highlighting a portfolio that presents numerous opportunities for both Togolese and European private sectors. This momentum, he noted, is designed to foster growth and employment in key strategic areas, including energy, agriculture, and digital technology.
Security and development: an essential link
The ambassador also focused on the deeper cooperation in peace and security, which he considers integral to any development initiative. He reiterated that the European Union has augmented its support for the Togolese armed forces, assisting in both counter-terrorism efforts and the enhancement of maritime security.
Gwilym Ceri Jones further acknowledged the excellent quality of relations forged between Togo and the European Union, expressing confidence that this robust partnership will continue and deepen beyond his mandate.
The DCP 2021-2027: a framework for cooperation
European initiatives in Togo are guided by the Joint Multi-annual Programming Document (DCP) 2021-2027, which allocates a portfolio of 201 million euros. This framework directs funding towards three primary areas: human development and socio-economic inclusion, sustainable agro-industries and natural resource management, and the consolidation of a peaceful and resilient Togolese society founded on inclusive governance.
A new tripartite mechanism for business
This dynamic cooperation received an additional boost last June with the official launch of a tripartite cooperation mechanism. This initiative brings together the Togolese government, Team Europe, and Eurocham Togo. This permanent consultation framework aims to enhance the business climate, stimulate European investments, and support the economic reforms undertaken by the Togolese government.
It is also designed to channel cooperation towards more tangible outcomes: job creation, private sector development, and the structural transformation of the Togolese economy. These initiatives, according to both parties, underscore the strength of a partnership poised for continued success even after Ambassador Jones’s departure.
