Strengthening constitutional ties between Gabon and Togo

The constitutional courts of Gabon and Togo are taking significant steps to deepen their collaboration, emphasizing shared learning and joint initiatives. Yesterday, during a meeting at the Palais de la Constitution in Libreville, Presidents Dieudonné Aba’a Owono and Professor Djobo-Babakane Coulibaley laid the groundwork for this partnership, following the arrival of the Togolese delegation for a working and goodwill visit.

This cooperation reflects the strong diplomatic ties between Gabon’s Head of State, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, and Togo’s President of the Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé. Both leaders share aligned perspectives on regional and global challenges, fostering a climate of trust and mutual understanding.

According to the two presidents, the alignment of their constitutional courts is timely given the evolving demands of modern governance. As justice systems adapt to societal shifts, safeguarding intergenerational rights, dignity, and freedoms remains paramount. “This dialogue isn’t just beneficial for our institutions—it strengthens Africa’s legal framework,” stated Dieudonné Aba’a Owono. He expressed hope that this visit would mark the beginning of ongoing exchanges, enabling judges from both nations to collaborate, exchange rulings, and address shared concerns.

Professor Djobo-Babakane Coulibaley echoed this sentiment, highlighting the urgency of the initiative. “Amid global instability where the rule of law faces growing challenges, our courts’ dialogue reaffirms our shared commitment to constitutional governance.” The Togolese delegation is set to conclude its visit this Wednesday.
