A scathing critique of linguistic standards
André Luther Meka, communications director of Cameroon’s ruling party, Rassemblement démocratique du peuple camerounais (RDPC), has publicly condemned the language proficiency displayed by Mamadou Mota, Vice President of the opposition Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC).
The controversy erupted during Mota’s appearance on the June 28, 2026 edition of the political talk show La Vérité en face on Equinoxe TV. Meka took to social media to express his outrage at what he described as a “massacre of the French language” and a flagrant disregard for grammatical and syntactic rules.
In a series of posts, Meka lamented, “I closely followed the Equinoxe TV debate on YouTube. I am appalled by Mamadou Mota’s butchering of French grammar and syntax—a disgrace to the language of Ronsard and Lamartine. The level of mediocrity exposed on screen last Sunday was nothing short of astounding!”
