Pastef split: Ibrahima Diam Sow joins Diomaye-Président coalition
A significant shift in Senegal’s political landscape has emerged with Ibrahima Diam Sow’s departure from the Pastef party. The former party coordinator from Podor has now aligned himself with the Diomaye-Président coalition, prioritizing national interests over partisan loyalty.
From party coordinator to independent voice
The Podor region’s political scene has been disrupted following Ibrahima Diam Sow’s exit from Pastef. Once a key figure in the party’s northern Senegal operations, he served as the first coordinator in Méri and led the Patriotes Soumis Movement (MPI). His decision to leave stems from deep disagreements with Pastef’s evolving direction.
Why he left the party
Diam Sow criticized what he described as contradictions within the party’s leadership and condemned a perceived dictatorship of uniformity in decision-making. These concerns led him to conclude that the party no longer aligned with his political vision.
A new political alliance
Today, he openly supports the Diomaye-Président coalition, backing President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s initiatives. His reasoning is clear: “The nation comes first.” This stance marks a departure from his earlier role as a foundational member of Pastef in northern Senegal.
The impact of his departure
Diam Sow’s influence in Podor was substantial. He played a pivotal role in Pastef’s early growth, notably organizing Ousmane Sonko’s landmark 2017 visit to the region and collaborating with local leaders like Ibrahima Sy in mobilization efforts. His exit underscores broader tensions within Senegal’s political arena.
