Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko conveyed his profound frustration regarding the handling of judicial cases related to public accountability during a recent inter-ministerial council meeting.
Reports from the session indicate that the head of government spoke following a presentation by Justice Minister Yassine Fall, to whom he directly posed pointed questions about the judicial system’s effectiveness in addressing cases of alleged irregular management.
The Prime Minister challenged the slow pace of legal proceedings and the discernible lack of judicial follow-up in numerous sensitive files, suggesting a persistent sense of impunity. He highlighted his belief that substantial public funds may have been misappropriated without any tangible judicial resolutions yet emerging, an situation he asserted compromises the credibility of public action in Senegal.
During his address, Ousmane Sonko underscored the critical need to establish accountability across all tiers, encompassing both former and current administrative and political officials. He further raised concerns about what he termed persistent operational flaws within the judicial chain, even suggesting a structural impediment to processing specific cases within Senegal’s institutions judiciaires.
In response, the Justice Minister affirmed her department’s proactive efforts to expedite ongoing legal procedures. She reiterated the judiciary’s commitment to prosecuting implicated individuals when sufficient evidence is available, despite acknowledging institutional and operational challenges.
Nevertheless, the Prime Minister maintained his firm stance, advocating for a swift acceleration of procedures and enhanced transparency in case monitoring. He stressed that robust public accountability remains, in his view, a foundational pillar of the current administration’s mandate for the gouvernement Sénégal.
Concluding his remarks, Ousmane Sonko reiterated that all judicial matters serve the public interest and must, he insists, be handled with unwavering rigor and promptness to safeguard citizens’ trust in governmental institutions and promote justice in Senegal.
