Olympique de Marseille concludes Abidjan tour with historic match in Yamoussoukro
The Olympique de Marseille wrapped up a three-day preparation tour in Abidjan on Saturday, July 18, following their arrival in Côte d’Ivoire on July 15. The delegation, led by head coach Bruno Genesio and consisting of 80 members including 24 players, engaged in strategic training sessions and community initiatives during their stay.
The highlight of the visit came on Friday, July 17, when the Phocaean club faced Yamoussoukro FC in a friendly match at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan. The clash marked a rare opportunity for the recently promoted Ivorian side to test their mettle against a top-tier French team, offering them unprecedented exposure in the country’s football landscape.
Prior to the match, the delegation participated in a unique opening ceremony alongside Ivorian government officials and club representatives. The day before, the Marseille squad trained at the same stadium, with forward Faris Moumbagna joining the session to fine-tune his skills.
Strategic partnership beyond football
The Marseille tour was far more than a pre-season stopover. It was part of the Sublime Côte d’Ivoire promotional initiative, a collaboration renewed in April 2026 through 2029. The agreement, which generates approximately 3.275 billion FCFA (nearly 5 million euros) annually for the club, underscores the depth of ties between the two nations.
On July 14, three Ivorian ministers—Tourism head Siandou Fofana, Culture minister Françoise Remarck, and Sports secretary Adjé Silas Metch—jointly organized a press conference to rally national support for the event. The Tourism Ministry had also announced the club’s arrival on its official social media channels, reinforcing the government’s commitment to the project.
This coordinated governmental effort reflects how Abidjan views the Marseille visit as a national showcase, blending tourism, cultural promotion, and sports diplomacy into a cohesive strategy rather than merely a pre-season training camp.
Community engagement off the pitch
The Marseille players are expected to dedicate time during their stay to visit children in difficult situations in Abidjan, complementing the public training sessions already organized. These initiatives aim to strengthen ties between the club and local communities, reinforcing the tour’s broader social impact.
Ivorian sports tourism on the rise
The Marseille tour aligns with Côte d’Ivoire’s long-term strategy to position itself as a hub for sports tourism. The partnership with the French club, now extended until 2029, stands as one of the most visible symbols of this ambition on the global stage. For Yamoussoukro FC, the friendly match represents a rare chance for a club from the country’s interior to gain national and international attention, far removed from the usual spotlight on clubs from Abidjan.
Leadership in transition
Stéphane Richard, who officially took the helm of Olympique de Marseille on July 2, 2026, praised the partnership as a cornerstone of the club’s summer preparation. His presence in Côte d’Ivoire alongside Bruno Genesio marked one of his first international engagements since assuming leadership of the club. With the delegation scheduled to depart for France on Saturday, the tour served as a blend of athletic preparation, diplomatic engagement, and brand-building for both sides.
