The Spanish top-flight has officially called off the highly-anticipated clash between Celta Vigo and Osasuna, originally slated for Sunday evening at 21:30, marking the fourth postponement in the opening weekend of the season.

The governing body confirmed the setback after ground staff discovered severe fungal damage on the pitch at Balaídos, Celta Vigo’s home ground. Inspections carried out throughout Wednesday identified the issue, prompting immediate action to safeguard player safety and pitch integrity.

Celta Vigo and Osasuna now face a revised fixture date of Thursday, August 27, at 20:30, ensuring the match meets competition standards and minimises further disruptions to the league calendar.

LaLiga’s decision-making authority

The Spanish league has taken full responsibility for rescheduling, leveraging its expanded autonomy granted midway through last season. This move eliminates the need for further consultation with the Royal Spanish Football Federation, streamlining the process and providing clarity for all stakeholders.

A joint statement from laLiga, the federation, and both clubs underscored the collaborative effort behind the decision, reinforcing transparency and adherence to competition regulations.

Wider first-weekend postponements

This rescheduling follows three earlier delays in the season’s opening fixtures, including matches involving Valencia vs Real Betis, Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad, and Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao.
