Kémi Séba: The Pan-Africanist influencer stripped of French citizenship
While Russia conducts a physical conflict in Ukraine, it is also fighting a sophisticated war of influence across Africa. A key player in this strategy is Kémi Séba, a social media powerhouse who has recently been deprived of his French nationality.
At 42, the activist from Bénin is a central figure in the Pan-Africanist movement, known for his fierce opposition to Western policies. His French citizenship was officially revoked following a decree published in the government’s official journal on July 9. In response, he took to social media to celebrate, stating he felt “liberated from this burden.”
Though he may be less known in some circles, Kémi Séba is a massive star in Francophone Africa. His public appearances draw thousands, and his digital reach is immense, with over a million Facebook followers and YouTube videos that consistently garner hundreds of thousands of views. His past is controversial; he once led Tribe Ka, a black supremacist and antisemitic group that the French legal system dissolved in 2006. He now presents himself as a 21st-century African revolutionary.
A digital influence leader and global orator
Reports indicate that the Kremlin began monitoring Kémi Séba roughly ten years ago, as Vladimir Poutine tasked the late Wagner Group leader, Evgueni Prigojine, with expanding Russia’s footprint in Africa. The Wagner Group grew its influence through military services, resource extraction, and the creation of pro-Russian networks. Investigative research has even suggested that Prigojine directly financed and directed some of Séba’s political activities.
Operating through his NGO, Urgences Panafricaines, Séba maintains a heavy international schedule, hosting conferences in Brazil, Iran, Venezuela, and Russia. He was notably a guest at the Russia-Africa summit in Saint-Pétersbourg, hosted by Vladimir Poutine. Within France, he has been denounced by high-ranking officials as a “relay for Russian propaganda” who serves a foreign power intent on stoking anti-French sentiment.
His rhetoric frequently targets the concept of “Françafrique” and the CFA franc, which he labels a colonial currency. While he maintains that he is not a Russian agent, he systematically backs every African administration that breaks ties with France to align with Moscow. In countries like Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, Kémi Séba has publicly cheered for recent military takeovers, claiming that a broader movement is underway to bring more nations into this new geopolitical alignment.
