Massive casualties reported in fierce Anéfis clashes
The northern Mali conflict has escalated dramatically with a fresh wave of intense fighting in the town of Anéfis, located roughly 100 kilometers south of Kidal. In a televised address broadcast nationwide, Mali’s Chief of General Staff, General Jean Élysée Dao, confirmed a devastating toll on the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) following clashes with a coalition of separatist and terrorist factions.
Human cost of the Anéfis offensive
The Malian military suffered significant losses, with over thirty soldiers killed in the operation and more than sixty injured, including several in critical condition. The casualties were described as “martyrs” in the official statement, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
On the opposing side, the Malian army claims to have dealt heavy losses to the enemy coalition, which includes the Azauad Liberation Front and Al-Qaïda-affiliated groups such as the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM). While the military did not disclose exact figures, it asserted the neutralization of a substantial number of enemy combatants. The rebel alliance, however, acknowledged the loss of “some of its finest fighters” in a brief statement, though no specific numbers were provided.
Strategic importance of Anéfis
Anéfis remains a critical stronghold in the ongoing struggle for control in northern Mali. For the Malian Armed Forces, supported by Russian military partners, securing this position is pivotal to disrupting supply lines used by armed groups and safeguarding the critical route leading to the Kidal stronghold.
Military sources report that the clashes were exceptionally brutal. A contingent of Malian soldiers and Russian reinforcements initially found themselves under siege in a military camp, fending off relentless attacks. The tide turned only after the arrival of a heavily armed convoy from Gao, bolstered by aerial support, which enabled the army to regain control of the battlefield. The rebel coalition, in turn, described its retreat as a “strategic maneuver” to prevent civilian casualties.

The latest bloodshed in Anéfis highlights the entrenched challenges of Mali’s decade-long security crisis, which began in 2012. For the transitional military government in Bamako, the heavy losses serve as a stern test of its commitment to restoring peace and territorial integrity across the country.
