Côte d’Ivoire’s embassy in France condemns mélenchon’s remarks on ouattara’s presidency
Abidjan, 16 jul 2026 – The Embassy of Côte d’Ivoire to the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco has issued a strong declaration from Paris, expressing its “vehement protest” regarding statements made by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the La France insoumise party. These remarks, delivered during a political rally in France, are perceived as an attack on Ivorian institutions, its people, and President Alassane Ouattara.
According to the official statement, signed by Ambassador Maurice Kouakou Bandaman, Mr. Mélenchon commented on Côte d’Ivoire’s internal political landscape. He specifically accused the head of state of marginalizing political opponents during the most recent presidential election and of securing a fourth term, which he controversially labeled as “unconstitutional.”
The embassy unequivocally deems these declarations “irresponsible, disrespectful, offensive, and demeaning.” It firmly asserts that the French politician possesses “no legitimacy, authority, or competence” to pass judgment on Ivorian institutions, which were responsible for organizing and validating the various electoral processes.
The diplomatic representation underscored Côte d’Ivoire’s status as a sovereign nation since its independence on August 7, 1960. It emphasized that no foreign political figure is entitled to make statements considered offensive toward the country.
In its communication, the embassy also highlighted the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between Côte d’Ivoire and France. These relations, it stated, are built on mutual respect and have been fortified under the presidencies of Félix Houphouët-Boigny and Alassane Ouattara. The embassy suggested that any political leader aspiring to the highest office in France should prioritize the interests governing the relationship between the two nations.
Finally, the Embassy of Côte d’Ivoire to the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco announced its intention to pursue “all available legal avenues.” This action aims to address the remarks, which it considers an offense to the Ivorian people and their President, before the appropriate judicial bodies.
The statement was officially dated July 16, 2026, and bears the signature of Maurice Kouakou Bandaman, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Côte d’Ivoire to France and Monaco.
