Christian political engagement in Senegal remains limited
The Autonomous Christian Movement for Sustainable Development (MAC 20), a civil society organization in Senegal, has highlighted the insufficient political involvement of Christians in the country. Speaking at a forum in Mbour—south of Dakar—on June 10, the organization emphasized the need for stronger Christian leadership within political parties ahead of the upcoming legislative elections.
a call for greater christian leadership in politics
Under the patronage of the Minister of Armed Forces, Augustin Tine, the MAC 20 event focused on the theme “Christian Political Engagement and Leadership”. Emile Daly Diouf, the organization’s president, stressed that while Christians are active in politics, they lack a cohesive leadership voice. “Even as a minority, we must push for a more substantial presence in decision-making spaces,” he stated.
Diouf clarified that MAC 20 does not intend to field its own candidates but aims to support Christian politicians striving for leadership roles. “We advocate for their promotion within existing structures,” he explained. The movement also expressed openness to endorsing presidential candidates in 2019, signaling a strategic shift toward influencing political outcomes rather than direct candidacy.
current representation falls short
Hélène Tine, a Christian parliamentarian and daughter of the Minister of Armed Forces, acknowledged the underrepresentation of Christians in Senegal’s political landscape. With only three Christian deputies out of 150—including herself—she noted that many Christians are relegated to less prominent positions on electoral lists. “The Church encourages engagement, yet our community remains hesitant,” she said.
Tine attributed this gap to systemic barriers, emphasizing that Christians must seize opportunities to shape national policies. “Diversity has always been a cornerstone of Senegal’s democracy,” she remarked. “Both religious communities and political parties must work to ensure fair representation.”
next steps for political inclusion
MAC 20’s forum underscored the urgency of bridging this divide. By fostering mentorship and strategic alliances, the movement aims to empower Christians to take on leadership roles without abandoning their values. The call resonates as the nation prepares for pivotal elections, where active civic participation could redefine governance.
