Chad to commission 40 mw power plant as Algeria expands energy footprint

The Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, has announced the imminent laying of the foundation stone for a new 40-megawatt power plant in N’Djamena. The project, spearheaded by Sonelgaz International, marks a significant step in Algeria’s expanding energy initiatives across the African continent.

The announcement came during an official visit to Niamey, where the minister attended the inauguration of the Algerian-Nigerien Solidarity Power Plant in Gorou Banda. This 40-megawatt facility, built by Sonelgaz International, underscores Algeria’s commitment to fostering energy cooperation with neighboring Sahel nations.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Adjal highlighted the successful completion of the Niamey project, emphasizing Sonelgaz International’s ability to deliver large-scale energy infrastructure outside Algeria within strict timelines. He further revealed that the company is actively preparing for additional ventures across Africa, with the N’Djamena power plant being the first in a series of planned projects.

The minister noted a growing demand for Sonelgaz International’s technical expertise, citing strong interest from countries such as Côte d’Ivoire and Mozambique. These initiatives align with broader continental energy programs aimed at accelerating development through reduced project execution times and enhanced technical collaboration.

Sonelgaz International is poised to serve as a catalyst for Algerian public and private enterprises, integrating them into the project lifecycle to bolster national competencies and strengthen Algeria’s presence in African energy markets. This approach ensures shared value creation while positioning local firms as key players in cross-border energy ventures.

Earlier this year, Algeria and Chad formalized an agreement to construct the N’Djamena power plant. The project reflects the two nations’ commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation and advancing shared economic goals in line with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune‘s vision for South-South collaboration.
