Chad: general abdoulaye miskine’s long-awaited trial indefinitely suspended

General Abdoulaye Miskine’s long-awaited trial indefinitely suspended in Chad

Tchad : l’affaire du général Abdoulaye Miskine déprogrammée, le procès toujours bloqué

The legal proceedings concerning General Abdoulaye Miskine, known by his birth name Martin Koumtamadji, remain mired in a judicial deadlock. Although his case was inscribed on the general docket for the traveling criminal chamber session at the N’Djamena Court of Appeal on Monday, May 25, 2026, it was unexpectedly removed from the schedule. This postponement comes after years of detention without a definitive judgment, a situation that had generated considerable anticipation for the trial.

According to official documentation, the file was listed under reference number 093/2022. Abdoulaye Miskine was cited alongside other defendants, including Adoum Rakhis, Ringo Djouma, and Abdoulaye Gros. The charges against them encompass serious offenses such as criminal association, the establishment and participation in insurrectional movements, kidnapping, illegal confinement, severe abuse, rape, and extortion of property. The alleged location for these infractions was Tissi.

General Miskine was apprehended in November 2019 in N’Djamena and has since been held at Klessoum detention center for over six and a half years without facing trial. The latest scheduled hearing on May 25, 2026, was reportedly suspended. While some explanations point to the sudden passing of a court clerk, no new date has been communicated since. This lack of information only deepens the mystery surrounding an already sensitive case within Chad’s justice system.

Multiple local sources indicate that the case has been taken off the court calendar “until further notice.” Individuals close to the matter suggest that political pressures may be preventing the trial of the former leader of the Front Démocratique du Peuple Centrafricain (FDPC), despite the extensive duration of his detention and repeated pleas from his legal counsel and family.

The Central African Republic had requested Miskine’s extradition, but Chad declined to hand him over to Central African authorities. His involvement in the 2019 Khartoum Peace Accord further complicates this intricate judicial file, adding a significant political and regional dimension, particularly for the West Africa Sahel region.

Concerns about his health have also been prominent. For several years, his close associates have raised alarms regarding his struggles with renal insufficiency, arterial hypertension, vision impairment, and significant weight loss. He has been hospitalized on numerous occasions, notably in 2025, a year during which he also initiated a hunger strike following the confiscation of his medications.

For his supporters, this ongoing situation exemplifies prolonged detention without due process. Conversely, judicial authorities officially maintain that the case remains active within the court system. However, the sudden cancellation of the May 25, 2026, hearing reignites criticism over the persistent stagnation of this high-profile affair, which sits at the intersection of judicial, security, and political challenges affecting both Chad and the Central African Republic.

At present, no new date has been announced for the resumption of the trial. Therefore, the Abdoulaye Miskine case remains in limbo, without any clear prospects for judgment, release, or extradition.
