CEDEAO and un women launch green economy initiative for West Africa

Abidjan, 22 May 2026 — The ECOWAS Centre for Gender Development (CCDG) has joined forces with UN Women and key ECOWAS specialized agencies to launch a groundbreaking regional programme focused on gender equality, climate resilience, and the green economy. The initiative, validated during a high-level meeting in Abidjan, marks a significant step toward addressing West Africa’s most pressing environmental and social challenges.

Strategic roadmap finalized for regional transformation

During a two-day gathering held on 15 and 16 May at the ECOWAS Resident Representation in Côte d’Ivoire, stakeholders finalized the programme’s strategic framework and outlined a detailed implementation roadmap. The framework aims to align with the priorities of ECOWAS member states, reinforcing commitments to gender equity, climate adaptation, and sustainable economic practices.

The initiative also seeks to mobilize financial resources to support the ECOWAS Action Plan on Gender and Climate Change, ensuring that gender-responsive policies are embedded in climate action across the region.

Leaders emphasize inclusive green transition

Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, Director of the CCDG, highlighted the dual nature of the ecological transition—presenting both challenges and opportunities for women and girls in West Africa. She stressed that empowering female leadership in climate solutions is essential for building resilient communities.

Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, UN Women’s Resident Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, framed the programme as a critical shift from policy declarations to tangible actions. “This initiative demonstrates our collective resolve to turn climate and economic challenges into real progress for women across the Sahel,” she stated.

Dr. Kalilou Sylla, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, echoed the need for an inclusive green transition. He underscored that economic opportunities in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and climate-smart technologies must be accessible to all, particularly women and youth, to ensure no one is left behind.

Next steps: Final approval in Lomé

The finalised programme document is set to be officially adopted during a working session scheduled from 29 June to 6 July 2026 in Lomé, Togo. Stakeholders anticipate this milestone will accelerate the region’s transition toward a more equitable and sustainable future.
