Burkina Faso military shuts down major Ouagadougou mosque amid protests

The Burkinabè military government has ordered the indefinite closure of a major Sunni mosque in Ouagadougou following mass gatherings protesting the detention of a prominent imam known for his vocal criticism of the regime.

Mosque closure sparks tensions in Burkina Faso’s capital

The governor of Ouagadougou’s administrative region announced the mosque’s closure, citing “public order risks” amid ongoing unrest. The decision comes after days of demonstrations led by supporters of Mohamad Ishaq Kindo, a well-known Sunni cleric whose recent arrest has intensified local discontent.

Protests erupt over detained religious leader

Since his arrest on Tuesday, hundreds of worshippers have gathered near the mosque to demand his release. Security forces responded by dispersing the crowds, resulting in nearly a hundred arrests. Detainees were reportedly taken to a Republican Security Corps facility for what authorities described as “civic and citizenship training.”

Footage circulating on social platforms shows military personnel overseeing physical drills and prayers among detainees. While the authenticity of these videos cannot be independently verified, they have amplified public frustration.

Religious figure challenged controversial legislation

Mohamad Ishaq Kindo, president of Burkina Faso’s Sunni Council of Scholars, had publicly opposed a proposed law tightening restrictions on religious freedoms. His detention coincides with a broader crackdown under the military leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who seized power in September 2022.
