Burkina Faso and Benin strengthen ties with focus on security and trade
On June 2, 2026, Burkina Faso’s Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, held a crucial working session at the Koulouba Palace with Benin’s President Romuald Wadagni, who was in Ouagadougou for an official visit.
The meeting, followed by a joint press briefing from Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, marked a turning point in bilateral relations. Both leaders conducted an in-depth review of existing cooperation, reaffirming their shared commitment to deepen a partnership rooted in mutual trust, solidarity, and joint problem-solving to address regional challenges.
The discussions placed strong emphasis on the critical security situation in the subregion. President Traoré and President Wadagni underscored the urgent need to strengthen collaboration against terrorism, transnational crime, and violent extremism. Their determination to advance peace, stability, and sustainable development across West Africa was unequivocally stated.
Economic prospects also featured prominently in the talks. The two Presidents highlighted promising opportunities in trade, industry, vocational training, infrastructure, and logistics. The strategic role of the Port of Cotonou in supplying Burkina Faso was particularly noted, alongside the importance of streamlining transport corridors. They agreed to expedite the convening of the 5th Session of the Joint High Commission for Cooperation and to finalize pending agreements. Both leaders also praised the harmonious integration of their communities and reaffirmed the significance of historical and human ties between their peoples.
The visit concluded with an official invitation extended by President Wadagni to his Burkinabè counterpart, signaling a renewed momentum aimed at fostering regional prosperity and integration.
