Border security bust reveals migrant route to Burkina Faso
border security intercepts 24 migrants near Kassouala
Routine border checks in northeastern Bénin have uncovered an unauthorized crossing this week. On Tuesday morning, police at the Okpara bridge in Kassouala halted a group of 24 individuals, including a 20-year-old Béninois man suspected of orchestrating the clandestine journey.
Around 8:30 a.m., officers conducting a standard security sweep noticed the group of 23 Nigerian travelers, all of Hausa ethnicity, attempting to cross into Burkina Faso. Initial questioning revealed they had departed from Tchaki in Nigeria, spent the previous night in Boukouro—a Béninois village near the border—and were heading to gold mining sites in Burkina Faso.
All migrants presented valid identification documents, but authorities remain suspicious about the circumstances of their travel. Attention has turned to the suspected organizer, a young Béninois man from Bassila living in Parakou, who stands accused of facilitating illegal border crossings.
All individuals were taken to the Tchaourou police station for processing. An investigation is underway to determine whether this was part of a larger migrant smuggling network.
