Benin and Togo strengthen ties with new cooperation framework

Benin and Togo forge ahead with renewed partnership under Wadagni-Gnassingbé initiative

On June 3rd, Benin’s leadership announced an official ‘friendship and working visit’ during the inaugural regional tour led by the newly elected President. Meanwhile, Togolese authorities clarified that Romuald Wadagni’s trip to Lomé was made at the invitation of Faure Gnassingbé, Togo’s Prime Minister. What’s undeniable is that both nations are now charting a fresh course for collaboration.

This brief but significant visit took place within the framework of the deep-rooted historical bonds—rooted in friendship, brotherhood, solidarity, and exemplary cooperation—between Benin and Togo. A joint statement released afterward emphasized the shared commitment of both governments to deepen their strategic partnership, driving progress and prosperity for their citizens.

Highlighting the enduring centuries-old ties of peaceful coexistence and fraternity between their peoples, the two leaders reaffirmed their resolve to strengthen collaboration across all sectors of mutual interest. They underscored the pivotal role of sustained political dialogue as a cornerstone for conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and mutual trust in the region.

Discussing economic ties, the Presidents celebrated the steady growth in trade between their countries. They agreed to intensify efforts to enhance cross-border connectivity, streamline trade flows, attract private investments, and foster economic complementarities. These steps aim to unlock new opportunities for businesses and communities on both sides of the border.

On security matters, the leaders voiced deep concern over the persistent and expanding threats posed by terrorism, violent extremism, and transnational organized crime across West Africa. They pledged to bolster security cooperation, including deeper intelligence sharing and tighter border management, to address these challenges effectively.

At the close of the visit, Romuald Wadagni extended a formal invitation to Faure Gnassingbé—West Africa’s longest-serving leader—to undertake an official state visit to Benin. The timing and logistics of the trip will be determined through diplomatic channels. Notably, Gnassingbé has not visited Benin in the past decade, despite President Patrice Talon’s time in office.
