The unthinkable happened on the football pitch as Belgium pulled off a miraculous World Cup victory against Senegal, securing their spot in the Round of 16 with a breathtaking 3-2 win.

With just minutes left in regular time, Senegal dominated the match, holding a two-goal lead thanks to strikes from Habib Diarra (24′) and Ismaïla Sarr (51′). Yet, the Red Devils refused to surrender, sparking a dramatic comeback.

Senegal’s commanding start

The match began with Senegal pressing hard, putting immense pressure on Belgium’s defense. Thibaut Courtois, the towering goalkeeper, could only tip a cross from Ismail Jakobs over the bar after a brilliant run by Sadio Mané (13′). Moments later, Habib Diarra capitalized on a rebound to open the scoring (24′).

Senegal doubled their lead when Ismaïla Sarr converted a cross from Sadio Mané’s left wing, though the initial header struck the post before Diarra, 22, pounced on the loose ball to make it 2-0.

A Belgian resurgence

At halftime, Belgium’s coach Rudi Garcia made bold substitutions, bringing on Romelu Lukaku among others. Despite the changes, Senegal extended their lead through Ismaïla Sarr (51′).

The second half saw tensions rise between Belgian captain Youri Tielemans and teammate Leandro Trossard. But just as the match seemed lost, Belgium found their rhythm. A long-range effort from Ismail Jakobs narrowly missed the target (77′), before Lukaku finally broke through with a well-placed finish (86′).

Two minutes later, Tielemans headed in an equalizer (89′), sending the game into extra time. The final minutes were electric, with Dodi Lukébakio’s shot rattling the crossbar (117′). But justice prevailed when VAR awarded Belgium a penalty for a foul on Tielemans, which he converted to seal the dramatic win.

Reactions from both sides

“In football, anything is possible as long as you believe. This team’s strength lies in those who come off the bench—you can’t win matches with just eleven players.” — Rudi Garcia, Belgium coach

The Red Devils now advance to face the winner of the USA vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina match in the Round of 16 on July 7th. For Senegal, their fourth World Cup campaign ends in heartbreak, echoing their recent African Cup of Nations disappointment at Morocco’s hands.

“We’re out, and it hurts. Credit goes to the team that gave everything, but we couldn’t handle our lead.” — Pape Thiaw, Senegal coach
