Union africaine and Tchad’s rights commission unite to advance transitional justice
The Chairman of Chad’s National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), Belngar Larmé Jacques, welcomed a high-level delegation from the African Union (AU) on June 24. The meeting aimed to bolster the transitional justice process in Chad, reinforcing peace and social cohesion.
Led by Maria Jose Samba Ovono Obono, the AU’s Special Representative to Chad and Head of Mission in N’Djamena, the delegation operates under a partnership between the African Union and the International Center for Transitional Justice. This collaboration seeks sustainable resolutions to the conflicts that have long affected Chad.
Following the discussions, Maria Jose Samba Ovono Obono highlighted the indispensable role of the national human rights institution. « The CNDH’s contributions are vital. That’s why we are here today—our presence underscores the importance of their work in driving this process forward. »
She also outlined the AU’s tangible commitments to the initiative. « The African Union will provide technical assistance, strengthening institutional capacities so that transitional justice in Chad becomes a cornerstone for lasting peace, social unity, and national rebuilding. »
Expressing her satisfaction with the productive exchanges, she noted that the mission identified key needs and challenges faced by the CNDH, paving the way for targeted support. The AU’s engagement underscores the shared commitment of Chad’s leadership and national institutions toward fostering cohesion and sustainable peace.
