Senegal’s president dismisses prime minister ousmane sonko amidst rising tensions
A significant shift in Senegal’s political landscape unfolded as President Bassirou Diomaye Faye removed his influential Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko. This decision follows months of escalating disagreements between the two leaders, whose combined appeal had propelled them to power in April 2024.
The culmination of ongoing friction between the two prominent figures, who ascended to leadership in April 2024 on a wave of widespread public optimism, became clear on Friday, May 22. Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced the termination of his Prime Minister and former political ally, Ousmane Sonko. A statement broadcast on national television by the Secretary-General of the Presidency confirmed that President Faye had “ended the tenure of Mr. Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister, and consequently, that of all ministers and secretaries of state within the government.” The declaration further specified that “members of the outgoing government are instructed to manage current affairs.” No immediate details were provided regarding the appointment of a new Prime Minister.
Ever since President Bassirou Diomaye Faye assumed office, a noticeable escalation of strain has characterized the relationship between him and his erstwhile mentor, the charismatic Prime Minister. Sonko’s substantial influence had been instrumental in propelling their political partnership to the highest echelons of power. As a vocal adversary of former President Macky Sall, who served from 2012 to 2024, Ousmane Sonko faced disqualification from the 2024 presidential election. This was due to a defamation conviction that resulted in the revocation of his civil rights, leading him to endorse Bassirou Diomaye Faye as his proxy in the electoral contest.
However, in early May, President Faye openly expressed concerns about what he termed the “excessive personalization” exhibited by his Prime Minister within the governing party. During a television interview, he had stated, “As long as he remains Prime Minister, it is because he retains my confidence. Should that no longer be the case, a new Prime Minister will be appointed.” On Friday, Ousmane Sonko promptly responded to his dismissal via his Facebook account, writing, “Alhamdoulillah. This evening I will sleep with a light heart in Keur Gorgui city,” referring to his residential district in Dakar.
