Dakar — The National Assembly of Senegal has adopted an ambitious legislative agenda following a high-level meeting of its Presidents’ Conference. While labor and social security codes are slated for committee review this Saturday and plenary debate on Monday, the constitutional amendment proposal remains the focal point of national attention.
During a closed-door session, the Assembly’s President, Ousmane Sonko, addressed the Bureau regarding the constitutional revision bill. He highlighted the absence of any formal response from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye concerning the mandatory advisory opinion that had been formally submitted to the Executive branch weeks ago.
In response to this prolonged silence, Sonko has set a firm deadline of Monday, June 22. Should the presidency fail to provide feedback by then, the Assembly’s Bureau will immediately convene to advance the legislative process regardless of the Executive’s position. The Speaker emphasized his determination to see the constitutional amendment debated and voted on before the conclusion of the current ordinary session.
Sonko also used the opportunity to press the urgency of two critical financial documents—already approved by the Council of Ministers—awaiting submission to Parliament: the Loi de finances rectificative (budget adjustment bill) and the Débat d’orientation budgétaire (budget orientation debate). The legislative-executive standoff now enters its decisive phase.
