Sahel crisis: Catholic aid networks unite to tackle Mali’s humanitarian challenges

In a bold move to strengthen regional collaboration, Catholic aid organizations from the Sahel are gathering in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, to address the escalating humanitarian crisis triggered by Mali’s ongoing instability.

Unified response to Mali’s crisis

Representatives from Caritas Burkina Faso, Caritas Mali, Caritas Niger, and Caritas Senegal have convened for a critical five-day meeting beginning February 19. This assembly marks the latest initiative under the Sahel Caritas Platform, established in 2007 to enhance collective emergency response across West Africa’s most vulnerable nations.

Building a regional communication framework

The gathering focuses on developing a robust regional communication system to streamline emergency operations between Catholic aid networks. Key participants include heads of information and emergency response teams, who are working to create standardized protocols for crisis management.

Empowering local aid networks

According to Father Isidore Ouédraogo, Executive Secretary of Caritas Burkina, the meeting aims to establish a unified operational framework. This will enable faster, more coordinated responses to emergencies spilling over from Mali, where ongoing conflict has displaced hundreds of thousands of people.

Since 2012, the Emergency Appeal 28/2012 has been mobilizing resources to bolster preparedness and response capabilities across the Sahel. The initiative specifically targets the fallout from Mali’s crisis, reinforcing local aid networks’ ability to deliver critical support.

Addressing the refugee crisis

The meeting comes as neighboring countries grapple with an influx of Malian refugees, with estimates suggesting nearly 300,000 displaced individuals have sought shelter across the region. This gathering underscores the urgent need for a cohesive strategy to manage the humanitarian fallout.
