Ousmane Sonko celebrates Abdoulaye Wade’s 100th birthday as democratic icon
On the occasion of Me Abdoulaye Wade’s centennial milestone, Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, paid heartfelt tribute to the elder statesman, whom he described as a towering figure in the nation’s democratic journey.
In a poignant message shared on X, the Pastef leader hailed Wade’s century of service, calling it “a century of meaningful life.” The tribute came as Senegalese mark both the centenary and Eid al-Adha, which limited formal celebrations.
“Though national festivities were constrained by coincidence with Tabaski, millions of Senegalese honor him in the quiet of their hearts—through prayers and affectionate remembrance. Perhaps that is the truest form of homage,” Sonko reflected.
He went on to underscore Wade’s pivotal role in shaping Senegal’s democratic foundations, tracing his political legacy from his 1978 election to the National Assembly to the historic 2000 presidential transition that ended decades of one-party dominance.
“Me Abdoulaye Wade stands as one of the most illustrious architects of Senegalese democracy,” Sonko affirmed.
Beyond politics, he shared personal reflections on the bond he shared with Wade, recalling moments of generosity and trust, particularly during critical junctures in 2017 and 2019. “He bestowed upon me a rare gift—not the transfer of power, but the rarer gift of trust,” Sonko said.
Closing his tribute, he invoked divine protection for Wade, affectionately addressing him as “grandfather,” and prayed for Senegal’s continued path toward progress while upholding its core values.
