Opposition unites against Senegal government after sonko ruling

Opposition coalition urges united front after constitutional council backs Ousmane Sonko

The Front pour la Défense de la Démocratie et de la République (FDR) has sharply criticized the Constitutional Council’s decision to reinstate Ousmane Sonko as a member of the National Assembly. In a statement released today, the opposition alliance argues that the ruling does not resolve the ongoing political dispute surrounding Sonko’s return to parliament.

While acknowledging the Council’s lack of jurisdiction over the forfeiture claims filed by opponents, the FDR insists that the decision “does nothing to silence” the objections raised against Sonko’s reinstatement. The coalition continues to challenge the former Prime Minister and the ruling party, accusing them of fostering a climate of incompetence and arrogance within the country.

In its communiqué, the FDR also scrutinizes recent remarks made by Sonko in interviews with international media outlets, asserting that his statements reflect a divisive interpretation of national identity. The coalition portrays Senegal as navigating a troubled period, warning of what it describes as dangerous deviations by the current administration.

The opposition front has reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing its objectives through constitutional and legal frameworks. Beyond the Sonko case, the FDR is rallying political parties, civil society groups, labor unions, youth movements, and pro-democracy advocates to forge a broad coalition aimed at offering an alternative to the existing government.

This declaration follows the Constitutional Council’s dismissal of legal challenges that sought to overturn the process allowing Sonko to reclaim his parliamentary seat. The ruling effectively concludes the legal battle initiated by opposition forces over this matter.
