Haut-Uele official denies alleged ties between Governor Bakomito and Corneille Nangaa

Government Communication Unit responds to accusations of political collusion

The Communication Cell of the Haut-Uele Provincial Government swiftly addressed allegations linking Governor Jean Bakomito Gambu to Corneille Nangaa. Muammar Awoni, Head of the Cellcom, issued a detailed rebuttal to clarify what he described as unfounded claims.

The statement from the provincial communication team categorically dismisses claims that Isiro experienced an economic shutdown on June 17, 2026. Awoni emphasized that such reports lack factual basis and urged verification from local stakeholders.

Regarding school disruptions, the official clarified that June marks the end of the academic year in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, making such claims irrelevant. Additionally, he denied any organized marches occurred in Isiro on the specified date.

The governor’s alleged proximity to Corneille Nangaa, accused by many Congolese of fueling violence in the East through alliances with the M23/AFC, was also refuted. Awoni highlighted Governor Bakomito’s recognized efforts in promoting peace across Haut-Uele and his alignment with President Félix Tshisekedi’s vision for stability.

Awoni underscored the governor’s contributions to security, including logistical support to FARDC operations, particularly in Watsa’s Mungbere territory, where suspected ADF incursions have been reported. He stressed that the situation remains under control thanks to coordinated military efforts.

The statement concluded by condemning what it termed a smear campaign against the governor, urging media outlets to uphold journalistic ethics and verify facts before publication.
