French Prime Minister Arrives in Rabat to Bolster Strategic Partnership with Morocco

The Prime Minister of France, Sébastien Lecornu, landed in Rabat on Wednesday evening for a two-day official visit aimed at deepening the strategic partnership between France and Morocco. The trip follows a period of warming relations between the two nations, marked by France’s 2024 recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.

Lecornu was received by his Moroccan counterpart, Aziz Akhannouch, and arrived with a delegation of twelve French ministers. The visit culminates in the 15th High-Level Franco-Moroccan Meeting, a key forum for bilateral dialogue that has not convened since 2019.

Key Agendas: Security, Energy, and Economic Cooperation

During the visit, both countries are expected to sign approximately fifteen agreements spanning aviation, infrastructure, water management, electrical interconnection, defense, and cultural exchanges. A landmark partnership between the Arab World Institute in Paris and Morocco’s Ministry of Culture is also on the agenda. These discussions may also pave the way for an upcoming official visit by King Mohammed VI to France, a visit already agreed upon in principle.

Strengthening Morocco’s Role in Regional Stability

France is increasingly positioning Morocco as its primary partner in the Maghreb region. The visit highlights Paris’s intent to enhance cooperation, particularly on security matters in the Sahel. While Algeria remains a sensitive neighbor, relations between Paris and Algiers have shown signs of improvement, further solidifying Morocco’s strategic importance to France.

A Reaffirmation of Bilateral Commitments

This high-level meeting underscores the depth of the Franco-Moroccan relationship, built on shared economic, cultural, and geopolitical interests. The agreements set to be signed reflect a commitment to long-term collaboration and mutual growth.
