Chad president of borkou provincial council detained in N’Djamena amid defamation case

Ahmat Bedei Toullomi, the president of the Borkou provincial council in Chad, was taken into custody late Thursday afternoon in N’Djamena and transferred to the General Coordination of Judicial Police. The arrest occurred inside the premises of the La Résidence hotel just before 5 p.m.

The detention follows a judicial investigation initiated after a defamation and public insult complaint was filed against him. According to official documents, the complaint was lodged by Goudje Gueillet Hemchi and Kodou Omari, who accuse Ahmat Bedei Toullomi of making false and damaging social media posts.

The complainants firmly deny his allegations, calling them “completely false, baseless, and deceitful,” and argue that the accusations have severely tarnished their personal and professional reputations.

A formal summons was issued by the prosecutor’s office near the N’Djamena Court of First Instance on August 4, 2026, requesting his presence to address the charges against him. However, despite multiple invitations to appear, he failed to respond for over ten days. Consequently, law enforcement proceeded with his arrest to ensure his appearance before the competent authorities.

Within minutes of his detention, a statement was posted on his Facebook page at 5:10 p.m. stating: “Either the Head of State stands with the people, or criminals are stronger than the law. I have been abducted.”

To clarify, the detention is being carried out strictly as part of a legal procedure and does not imply guilt at this stage.
