Benin strengthens emergency medical services with 600 new oxygen concentrators

The healthcare infrastructure in Benin has reached a significant milestone in its development. On Thursday, April 16, 2026, Professor Benjamin Hounkpatin, the Minister of Health, officially accepted a shipment of 600 cutting-edge oxygen concentrators. This initiative is designed to bolster the emergency response capabilities of 23 medical facilities across the nation.

Advanced medical equipment to protect lives

Procured through UNICEF with financial backing from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, this equipment represents a total investment exceeding 205,450 US dollars, which is approximately 116 million CFA francs. These “10LPM single flow” devices provide a steady supply of oxygen, a critical requirement for patients suffering from acute respiratory distress.

This massive distribution focuses on 23 hospitals and health centers located within several key regions, including Alibori, Littoral, Atacora, Borgou, Donga, Couffo, and Atlantique.

A strategic move to lower maternal and infant mortality

According to Minister Benjamin Hounkpatin, this donation is more than just a technical upgrade; it is a vital component of a broader national strategy to reduce maternal, neonatal, and child mortality. During the official ceremony, he emphasized that ensuring oxygen availability is essential for life-saving interventions.

“These devices are a clear demonstration of our resolve to provide every citizen with fair access to high-quality medical treatment, regardless of their location,” the Minister stated.

Strengthening international partnerships in health

The handover event was attended by His Excellency Wei Zhang, the Chinese Ambassador, and Ousmane Niang, the Resident Representative of UNICEF. Ambassador Zhang praised the strong diplomatic ties between China and Benin, confirming Beijing’s ongoing commitment to supporting the local health sector.

The UNICEF representative further noted that these tools, made possible by individual donors in China, will greatly enhance the resilience of the Beninese health system when facing life-threatening emergencies. This upgrade to the technical capacity of medical structures aligns with the government’s persistent efforts to modernize national health services and improve public care performance.
