ANC rejects constitutional reform talks in Togo

The Togolese National Alliance for Change (ANC), led by Jean-Pierre Fabre, has strongly criticized recent discussions about a potential constitutional reform in Togo. In an official statement, the opposition party condemned what it describes as a political maneuver aimed at distracting from pressing national issues.

No room for consensus on constitutional changes

According to the ANC, rumors of a new political dialogue to revise the Togolese Constitution lack legitimacy and fail to address the core concerns of citizens regarding democracy and governance. The party argues that such a move would primarily serve to strengthen the existing political framework rather than foster genuine reform.

The opposition has made it clear that it will not participate in any process it considers a sham dialogue. It has urged Togolese democratic forces, civil society organizations, and international partners to remain vigilant against any reform that does not emerge from a broad national consensus.

Ongoing constitutional concerns

The ANC also reiterated its reservations about the current Constitution, stating that recent institutional changes have raised serious questions about their legitimacy and ability to meet the democratic aspirations of the population. The party insists that any major constitutional reform must be preceded by an inclusive dialogue involving all political and social actors in the country.

Togo’s political climate remains tense

The opposition’s stance comes amid growing speculation about a possible new constitutional revision. The ANC’s firm position underscores its commitment to ensuring that any future reforms adhere to the principles of transparency and broad-based agreement, crucial for their credibility and acceptance.
